Don’t be confused by Adult Foster Care eligibility. To qualify for Adult Foster Care through Mass Care Link, applicants must meet certain physical and financial requirements.
Massachusetts residents are eligible if they are at least 18 years old and have a physical, cognitive, or behavioral impairment that leads them to require assistance with at least one activity of daily living (ADL). Applicants must also meet the financial requirements to qualify for MassHealth.
Activities of daily living include:
- Personal hygiene — bathing/showering, grooming, nail care, and oral care
- Dressing — the ability to make appropriate clothing decisions and physically dress/undress oneself
- Eating — the ability to feed oneself, though not necessarily the capability to prepare food
- Maintaining continence — both the mental and physical capacity to use a restroom, including the ability to get on and off the toilet and cleaning oneself
- Transferring/Mobility — moving oneself from seated to standing, getting in and out of bed, and the ability to walk independently from one location to another
Conditions that could cause you to need help with daily activities include:
- Advanced age
- Alzheimer’s or dementia
- Cognitive impairment
- Physical disability
- Mental health issues
